  1. Prof MS Swaminathan, India’s famed agricultural scientist and “Father Of India’s Green Revolution,” died this morning in Chennai. He was 98. Dr Swaminathan has been a Rajya Sabha MP, recipient of all three Padma awards, and was recognized as one of the most influential Asians of the 20th century by Time magazine.
  2. Govt sources say it has not permitted the Karnataka Bandh called by “Kannada Okkuta” leader Vattal Nagaraj from 6 am – 6 pm tomorrow against releasing Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu. Bengaluru Commissioner of Police B Dayananda said schools and colleges will remain closed and prohibitory orders will be imposed in the city tomorrow.
  3. Punjab Cong MLA Sukhpal Khaira, arrested in connection with a 2015 drugs case from his house in Chandigarh, was remanded till September 30 from Fazlika’s Jalalabad court. The state unit of Punjab called the arrest political vendetta by the AAP government.
  4. India today (September 28) marks the 116th birth anniversary of Revolutionary freedom fighter Shaheed Bhagat Singh. A sworn atheist, Bhagat Singh was an iconic member of the Hindustan Republican Association (HRA). He lived a brief but glorious life.
  5. Mohammad Ishaq, a 22-year-old son of a fruit vendor, was tied to a pole and beaten to death on suspicion that he stole ‘prasad’ in northeast Delhi’s Sunder Nagri area. Ishaq’s sister Uzma told the press, “Ishaq’s nails were broken, some taken out, and his fingers had cut. He was brutally beaten because he was a Muslim.”
  6. A team studying the post-disaster needs assessment in Joshimath has found that 2 in three houses in the hill town need to be rebuilt. The 35-member panel, comprising several expert agencies, was led by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).
