  1. The five-day special session of the Parliament began today, with PM Narendra Modi highlighting the historical significance of old Parliament premises, also hinting that “big decisions” would be made during this occasion. He also chaired a Union Cabinet meeting after the session.
  2. Addressing the Rajya Sabha, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge sought RS Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar “freedom for opposition MPs to speak.” He also remembered Jawaharlal Nehru’s contribution to nation-building and alleged that PM Modi gave statements in the Lok Sabha only twice.
  3. The Supreme Court on Monday asked Maharashtra Speaker Rahul Narwekar to respect its May 11 order and decide on the disqualification petitions of rebel Shiv Sena MLAs within a reasonable time, citing no progress made on its order since then.
  4. Miffed by criticisms against its leaders by TN BJP president Annamalai, AIADMK said it’s not in alliance with the BJP and any decision on it would be made only during the elections. Speaking to the media, AIADMK leader D Jayakumar said the BJP will fail in the state without his party’s support.
  5. Kerala health minister Veena George said the situation in the state is under control, as samples tested in the last three days have come negative. The minister also said genomic sequencing results needed to confirm no second wave of the Nipah outbreak will be available by Tuesday.
  6. Trains on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad route, halted due to the Narmada river flowing above the danger mark between Bharuch and Ankleshwar, resumed this morning. Western Railway’s Chief PRO Sumit Thakur told this to PTI as rain and flood situations improved in Gujarat.
  7. UP police shot at and injured all three accused, including brothers Shahwaz and Arbaaz, arrested for pulling the ‘dupatta’ of a 17-year-old girl and running over her, leading to her death. According to the police, the arrested trio tried to escape.
  8. With the Anantnag encounter entering its sixth day, Indian security forces have reached closer to the terrorist hideout in the dense forests of the Gadol area of Kokernag. Army sources said they are treading carefully, as they suspect that the militants would have planted IEDs.
