  1. The SC on Tuesday declined legal status for same-sex marriages under the Special Marriage Act, saying it’s for the Parliament to formulate laws and that it can only interpret them. However, the apex court added, “Queerness is not urban or elite,” contrasting the center’s argument.
  2. Explosions in two firecracker factories at Rangapalayam and Kammapatti village in Virudhunagar district of Tamil Nadu have killed 13 people. The mishaps come just a week after a fireworks unit explosion in TN’s Ariyalur District killed ten people.

  7. Two Swedish nationals were shot dead in Brussels in what is understood to be a terror attack. The attacker, an ISIS member, as he claims in the video he posted, calls the killing “Revenge in the name of Muslims.”
  8. Alert netizens in India want Aadhaar card holders to lock their biometric data using the mAadhaar app or the UIDAI website. They say scammers are trying to steal fingerprint data from points where people used them to access Aadhaar-linked bank accounts.
  9. Harley-Davidson X440 deliveries have begun in India. Also, bookings for the bike were reopened on October 16. Jointly developed by Hero and Harley at the former’s Neemrana factory in Rajasthan, X440 garnered over 25,000 bookings soon after its launch.
  10. Today is the International Day of Eradication of Poverty. According to the UN, at the end of 2022, 8.4% of the world’s population (670 million people) lived in extreme poverty. The global body also said India lifted 415 million people from poverty in fifteen years.
