1. India’s Covid cases nearly 50k in a week: In just a week, the number of Covid infections in the country has surged by 90 percent. It is the highest case tally in a week since the week that ended on Feb 27. However, there was no proportionate rise in Covid-related fatalities during the week.  

2. UP govt bulldozes the house of the mastermind behind protests in Prayagraj: The Municipal authorities in Prayagraj razed down the house of Javed Mohammed, who was arrested for violence and arson during the Friday protests. Meanwhile, Delhi Jamaat said it would issue a fatwa against violent protests.

3. Woman attacked savagely with blade for slapping an eve-teaser: A forty-year-old mother of three children was attacked by three eve-teasers in Bhopal, MP when she objected to their lewd remarks and slapped one among them. The woman received more than 100 stitches on her face. Meanwhile, municipal corporation authorities pulled down the house of the prime accused Badshah Beg.       

4. Ford India offers a non-negotiable severance package to striking workers: The company, which is on its way to exiting operations in India, has warned its 2000-odd striking employees that they have the option to accept the severance package before 5 pm on June 13. It added that those continuing with the “illegal strike” beyond the deadline would face legal action and warned of early closure.

5. Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) coming up with a tractor plant in Mohali, Punjab: With the demand for tractors going up in the last two months, M&M is investing Rs.400 Crore to get the plant operational by the year-end. The plant will have an initial capacity of 30,000 units per annum. M&M is the world’s largest tractor manufacturer, with plants in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Haryana, and Telangana. 

6. Developing a zoo in forest land will be considered a forestry activity: In what is seen as a dilution of the Forest Conservation Act (FCA) 1980, the government said it would allow the development of a zoo with some public utilities in the forest lands. The upcoming project near Tadoba in Maharashtra, with features like Jungle safari, rescue, transit treatment, etc., on an area of 210 hectares, is likely to benefit from the new amends to the FCA. 

7. New Trade Corridor between Russia and India via Iran: The corridor connects St Petersburg in Russia to the Caspian seaport city of Astrakhan. From Astrakhan, the cargo will move all along the length of the Caspian to Anzali port in the North of Iran. Then from Anzali, it will be shipped by road to the Bandar Abbas port on the Persian Gulf. On reaching this port, the cargo will be lifted to a ship and sent to the Indian port of Nhava Sheva. The news was shared by the state-run Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA).  

8. BJP to seek consensus candidate for Rashtrapati Bhavan: The BJP has authorized Union Minister Rajnath Singh and Party chief J P Nadda to work on a consensus candidate for the post of the President. The party said the two leaders would run parleys with its NDA allies, the opposition UPA members, other political parties, and independents.  

9. Indian students who left Ukraine could complete their studies at Russian universities: Roman Babushkin, the deputy chief of mission of the Russian embassy in New Delhi, said on Sunday that Indian students who left their studies in Ukraine could complete them at Russian varsities, without losing a year. Rateesh. C. Nair, the honorary counsel of the Russian Federation and the Russian house in Thiruvananthapuram, said Russian varsities would accept scholarships that Indian students already held.  

10. All is well between China and India, says the Chinese defense minister: The Chinese defense minister, General Wei Fenghe, said India and China are neighbors and are maintaining good relationships.
