1. Vivo remitted 50% of its turnover to China to avoid paying taxes in India
The Enforcement Directorate (ED), which conducted raids at the premises of Chinese mobile manufacturer Vivo across 48 locations and 23 of its allied firms, said that Vivo India remitted Rs.62,476 crore, particularly to China.
2. Taliban loops in UAE to handle its Kabul airport
The Taliban government in Afghanistan has struck a deal with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to run its Kabul airport. However, the Taliban wants only Afghans employed for airport duty.
3. TMC workers shot dead, one at point-blank range
Three Trinamool Congress workers were shot dead in West Bengal’s South 24 Paraganas. When Swapan Majhi, a gram panchayat member, and two other booth presidents were on their way to the Gopalpur TMC party office, assailants stopped their vehicle and attacked them.
4. Akasa Air gets license to fly
Akasa Air, the startup carrier from Rakesh Jhunjhunwala, got the Air Operator Certificate from the Directorate General of Civil aviation (DGCA) on Thursday. Earlier this week, the company introduced first-of-its-kind custom trousers, and jackets, for its crew.
5. Raj Babbar gets 2-year jail for assaulting a polling officer in 1996
A UP court awarded a two-year jail term for Actor-turned politicians Raj Babbar in a 1996 assault case. Raj Babbar, at that time, was Samajwadi Party’s Lucknow candidate.
6. Red alert in three coastal districts in Karnataka
IMD has predicted ‘heavy to very heavy’ rainfall in three coastal Karnataka districts (Dakshina Kannada, Upupi, and Uttara Kannada) on July 8th and 9th. The weather agency, issuing a red alert in these districts, said rains could be above 204.5mm.
7. MEA has said Dalai Lama is India’s Guest
After China criticized PM Modi’s greetings to exiled Tibetian Spiritual Guru Dalai Lama on his 87th birthday, MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said that India treats Dalai Lama as its guest, which is a consistent policy adopted by the country.
8. UN says Global goals in jeopardy
A United Nations report, released on Thursday, said the Covid 19 pandemic has put in peril the success of its 17 global goals, or sustainable development goals (SDGs) with a 2030 target. It also indicated that the pandemic has made 93 million people impoverished.
9. YS Jagan Mohan Reddy to become party chief for life
In a two-day YSRC party plenary, which begins today, amendments are likely to be made to anoint YS Jagan Mohan Reddy as party chief for life. The party may also do away with the honorary president post held by Jagan’s mother, Y S Vijayamma.
