1. LeT terrorist killed in an encounter at Baramulla: Security forces in J&K killed a Lakshar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorist in the Binner area of Baramulla today. During the search operation based on intelligence, a terrorist, identified as Irshad Ahmad Bhat, opened fire at security personnel and was killed in retaliatory firing. Police said they also recovered an AK rifle, two magazines, and 30 rounds.

2. Bengal cops intercept Congress MLAs from Jharkhand with cash haul: Three Jharkhand Congress legislators — Irfan Ansari, Rajesh Kachchap, and Naman Vixel Kongari — were intercepted at the Panchla-Ranihati intersection, en route to East Midnapore in Bengal, with a large pile of cash loaded in their car. Congress has expelled all three for anti-party activities. 

3. Resentment amongst BJP cadre over Yuva Morcha leader Praveen Nettaru’s murder in Karnataka: Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) members breached security at Karnataka Home Minister’s residence demanding a ban on the People Front of India (PFI). Following the incident, charges of trespassing, unlawful assembly, and rioting were slapped on 30 ABVP activists.

4. Fake cops in uniform question real cops in plain clothes: A four-member fake police team was fleecing the public in police uniform for ‘not wearing helmets’ and ‘moving around suspiciously.’ However, their luck elapsed when they picked up the patrol team of Bahraich district police in plain clothes. The policemen were in for a quirky surprise and the fake cops a stroke of bad luck. 

5. JD(U) has received the highest donation among regional parties: Bihar’s JD(U) has received Rs. 60.15 crores as donations during FY22 — the highest donation among regional political parties. DMK in Tamil Nadu is at the second spot with Rs. 34 crores, followed by AAP, receiving Rs. 11.32 crores.      

6. Court rejects Teesta’s bail application: Sessions court in Ahmedabad has rejected the bail plea of social activist Teesta Setalvad and Ex-DGP R B Sreekumar. Teesta and Sreekumar are facing charges of fabricating evidence to defame and falsely implicate innocent people, including the then CM of Gujarat, Narendra Modi.  

7. Mahouts to receive the ‘Gaj Gaurav’ award on World Elephant Day: Mahouts from the Malasar tribal community will receive the ‘Gaj Gaurav’ award this year. They are traditionally employed in rescuing, capturing, and training of elephants at the Kozhikamuthi and Varakaliyar elephant camps in the Analamai Tiger Reserve (ATR) in Valparai.  

8. China holds military exercise near Taiwan: In a message to the US ahead of its House speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Asia, China held live-fire military drills near the Pingtan islands in Taiwan Straight. Meanwhile, Pelosi, who is “very excited” about her Asia trip, refused to let out her itinerary, including whether she would stop in Taiwan or not. 

9. Pakistan’s credit outlook falls from stable to negative: Global rating agencies, Moody’s, Fitch, and S&P Global, have downgraded Pakistan’s credit rating from stable to negative. Pakistan, which is already facing a dollar shortage, faced the biggest monthly slide of its rupee since 1989. The currency fell by more than 14% against the dollar in July.  

10. First Monkeypox fatalities in Europe: With 4,298 reported cases of Monkeypox in Spain, the country, on Saturday, announced the second death by the virus. Responding to the report, Catherine Smallwood, WHO Europe’s senior emergency officer, said, “Our goal needs to be on interrupting transmission quickly in Europe and stopping this outbreak.”
