1. President Droupadi Murmu Sworn-in: India’s first tribal president and the youngest among all who have assumed the presidential office, Droupadi Murmu, took oath today at the Parliament’s Central Hall in New Delhi. She said, “My election is evidence that the poor in India can not just dream but also fulfill those dreams.”

2. India’s fourth Monkeypox case: Delhi reported its first Monkeypox case on Sunday. A 34-year-old resident of Paschim Vihar with no travel history to affected countries has tested positive for the virus. 

3. Development at the cost of nature: Aarey road has been shut for vehicular traffic and prohibitory orders have been issued raising fears that the move is for felling trees in the Aarey colony. Ignoring concerns raised by environmental activists and also the general public, the Shinde-Fadnavis government in Maharashtra after assuming office gave nod for clearing a section of the Aarey colony to build a car shed for the proposed Metro project.   

4. Irani sends legal notice to Congress leaders: Union Minister Smriti Irani has sent legal notices to Congress leaders Jairam Ramesh, Pawan Khera, and Netta D’Souza, asking them to tender an unconditional apology for their false allegations against her daughter.  

5. Trade in the backdrop of war and sanctions: Imports from Russia have gone 3.5 folds higher in April and May 2022. Fuel, fertilizer, and edible oil have been the key commodities that have contributed to the rise. However, there is a dip in diamond imports. 

6. “They too are citizens of this great country”: Justice P V Kunhikrishnan of the Kerala HC said that children of unwed mothers and rape survivors could carry their mothers’ names on birth certificates and other important documents. 

7. SL president’s office reopening today: Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe allows peaceful, non-violent protests within the city, however, without endangering lives and properties. The presidential office, which is reopening on Monday, will have the siege lifted at the protest site near the secretariat.  

8. India to bolster its defenses at the Chinese front with S-400: India to deploy its second squadron of S-400 Triumf surface-to-air missile systems along its northern borders with China. With deliveries from Russia underway, the deployment is likely to be complete in two to three months. 

9. DGCA to conduct an audit of airlines: Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has initiated a special two-month long audit of airlines, after it conducted spot checks following repeated snags in the last 45 days. 

10. Face-off between CM Nitish Kumar and BJP continues: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar skipped the oath-taking ceremony of the new president Droupadi Murmu. In the recent past, he has been conspicuously absent in events with BJP’s top brass.
