1. IndiGo technicians demand better salary: A sizeable number of aircraft maintenance technicians of Indigo airlines went on a mass leave on July 8 in major hubs like Hyderabad and Delhi. Earlier on July 3, cabin crew members of the aircraft went on mass sick leave to attend the walk-in by Tata-owned Air India.

2. Crisis brews in Goa Congress: After Shiv Sena’s Maharashtra challenge, the Congress party faces loyalty shifts in Goa, with 6 out of its 11 MLAs keen on joining the BJP. Congress has blamed the BJP is attempting to buy its lawmakers by offering them large sums of money.  

3. Gun violence in SA kills 21: Unidentified gunmen, armed with rifles and automatic guns, stormed into three taverns in South Africa, and opened fire killing at least 21 people and injuring many. Police have called the incident ‘random’ shootings.  

4. Survey on trucker’s plight: In a survey conducted by Asia-Africa Supply Chain Transform Health Alliance and People to People Health Foundation, 75% of the truck drivers interviewed said they faced harassment by police and local groups.  

5. Route to Garhwal’s dreamy land shut: The ‘Valley of flowers,’ a famous tourist place and UNESCO World Heritage site in the Garhwal Himalayas, is now closed for visitors following severe landslides due to heavy rainfall in the region. 

6. Covid cases in TN drop after 52 days: Active Covid cases in Tamil Nadu have started falling after 52 days. Speaking to reporters, state health minister Ma Subramanian said 88% of TN people now have immunity, and chances of a fourth wave of Covid 19 where lockdowns and restrictions are needed is slim. 

7. Karnataka’s new language policy: Karnataka government has proposed a three-language formula for the children in the state. Under language education, the state is also planning to make Kannada mandatory for classes I to XII. 

8. Millions in cash seized from President Rajapaksa’s residence: Protestors who stormed into the official residence of Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa have unearthed cash worth Rs. 17.85 million rupees (approx. $50,000). The cash in crisp banknotes turned on to the police would be produced in the court today. 

9. PM Modi unveils National emblem atop the new parliament building: Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled India’s National Emblem on the roof of the new parliament building today. The emblem is 6.5 m tall and made of 9500 kg of bronze.  

10. India to become the world’s most populated country by 2023: India would surpass China to become the world’s most populous country by 2023, per a UN report published on world population day. It also highlighted that Asia remains the most populous continent, with 61% of the global population (approx. 4.7 billion people).
