  • India today celebrates the National Girl Child Day 2024. PM Modi, in his greeting, has called girls the ‘changemakers.’ Both Central and State governments are running numerous developmental programs focussed on girl children and their education and safety, though a lot still needs to be done. 
  • Gunfire by a BSF Jawan to thwart a cattle smuggling attempt near the Indo-Bangladesh border killed Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Sepoy Mohammad Roisuddin, who was not in uniform. He was initially moved to Bongaon Hospital by the BSF. However, he succumbed to the bullet injury while undergoing treatment.
  • With the budget session beginning on Jan 31, a CISF contingent of 140 security personnel would provide enhanced security to the Parliament premises. The move comes after the Parliament security breach during the winter session in December 2023.     
  • Dehraduni Basmati, famous for its distinct aroma and taste, has had a 62% fall in its cultivation in the last four years, a study commissioned by the Uttarakhand Biodiversity Board revealed. The study report finds multiple factors as reasons for the same, including rising summer temperatures, poor soil fertility, reduction in the use of farmland manure, water scarcity for irrigation purposes, shifting rain patterns, and mindless use of chemical fertilizers, in addition to unplanned development in Seola-Majra. 
  • Elon Musk, in his recent post, has voiced for the revision of the UN bodies and said it’s absurd that India — the world’s most populous country — lacks a permanent seat in the Security Council. Earlier, in a similar post, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres highlighted how the Security Council isn’t reflecting today’s world and Africa doesn’t have a single seat in the council.
  • The central government has conferred Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honor, to socialist icon and two-time Chief Minister of Bihar, Karpoori Thakur. Thakur was the first one in the north to introduce an OBC quote and an MBC sub-quota within that in 1978. He was also a mentor to many prominent leaders of the state, including LAlu, Paswan, and Nitish Kumar. 
  • Carcasses of two tigers, including a partially eaten body of a two-year-old sub-adult cub and critical injury marks in them, found at the Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve’s Kolja forest range, suggests a possible cannibalistic behavior of a male tiger, said Deputy Director (core) of the reserve, Nandkishore Kole. He added that based on the autopsy report and circumstantial evidence, they suspect the involvement of a dominant male tiger in the region T192.   
  • India’s Bal Puraskar Awardees interacted with PM Narendra Modi on several subjects, including music, solar energy, sports, etc., at his residence and received a souvenir from him, a day after receiving the coveted award from President Droupadi Murmu. 
  • After exiting merger talks, Sony Corp approached the Singapore International Arbitration Center with an arbitration demand against ZEE. Meanwhile, the stock price of ZEE Entertainment fell by 33% on Thursday due to the ZEE-Sony deal collapse. ZEE Entertainment Enterprises, too, is expected to place an arbitration demand as it has exited some of its businesses to get the CCI nod for the merger. 
  • HDFC Bank is the first bank to reach the two crore credit card milestone, despite being the last entrant among leading banks to foray into the credit card business. As per RBI data, HDFC holds a 21% market share in the credit card segment from the total of 9.6 crore cards issued by all Indian banks put together. 
  • India is now the fourth largest stock market in the world, with a market capitalization of $4.3 trillion, beating Hong Kong, which has an M-cap of $4.29 trillion. The top three spots are held by the US ($51 trillion), China (8.5 trillion), and Japan ($ 6.5 trillion).
