  • Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the Interim budget in a short speech that lasted less than an hour. She informed that the government expects a nominal GDP growth of 10.5% in the upcoming financial year (2024-25). Additionally, she mentioned that the country’s fiscal deficit has reduced to 5.8% of the GDP. Experts attribute this reduction to the unmet capex target.  
  • During her interim Budget 2024 speech, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman stated that there will be a significant increase in investment in the country’s tourism sector. The government will focus on developing the tourism infrastructure of the Union Territory of Lakshadweep. However, the development assistance to the Maldives has decreased from ₹770 crore to ₹600 crore this year.
  • The committee of Anjuman Intezamia Masjid (AIM) of Gyanvapi has requested an immediate hearing from the Allahabad High Court regarding the order passed by the Varanasi District Court. The order permits the Hindu plaintiffs to worship in the southern cellar (Vyas Tehkana). AIM’s lawyer has also accused the administration of collaborating with the Hindu plaintiffs by making arrangements for their worship in haste.
  • Early on Thursday morning, Hindu devotees worshiped at the southern cellar (Vyas Ka Tekhana) of the Gyanvapi mosque complex. This follows a recent directive from the Varanasi district court allowing prayers at the location. According to a devotee who took part in the ritual, they claimed to have seen the Nandi bull.
  • The Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) in Maharashtra has agreed on the distribution of seats for 34 Lok Sabha seats among its members — Congress Party, NCP led by Sharad Pawar, and the Shiv Sena Uddhav Thackeray faction. A formal announcement will come once the talks on the remaining seats conclude. On February 2, the MVA partners will hold their third meeting. 
  • All the five accused in the December 13 Parliamentary Breach case told the Patiala HC they were subject to torture and electrocution by Delhi Police demanding a false confession. The accused added that they were forced to sign 70 blank pages intended for implicating opposition parties for their act in the parliament. 
  • Maratha quota activist Manoj Jarange Patil has issued another warning that he will begin an indefinite hunger strike starting on February 10. He told the media that the government has a responsibility to implement the draft law on the reservation, and he plans to hold a Victory rally after receiving the certificate of reservation.
  • Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has been sent a fifth summons by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to join its money laundering probe linked to the Delhi Excise Policy 2021-22 scam. Kejriwal had earlier skipped four summons calling them “illegal and politically motivated.”
