  • In a big relief to the families of 8 ex-Navy men facing the death penalty in Qatar, the Court of Appeal in Doha has commuted their death sentence. Sharing the news, India’s Ministry of External Affairs said, “The detailed judgment is awaited.”
  • ED has named Priyanka Gandhi Vadra in the Sanjay Bhandari Case chargesheet, though it doesn’t list her as an “accused.” Congress has retaliated, saying the BJP is attempting to hatch conspiracies ahead of the upcoming National elections. 
  • A day after the rampage by Karnataka Rakhana Vedike (KRV) vandals in Bengaluru, CM Siddaramaih said his government would pass an ordinance to direct businesses to use signboards with 60% Kannada in it. However, he added, “We do not encourage any kind of Vandalism in Bengaluru.”
  • JN.1 COVID variant cases in the country are steadily rising. According to the Union Health Ministry, 157 JN.1 cases have been reported. Kerala, with 78 cases of the strain, is at the top, followed by Gujarat with 36 cases, and Goa with 18 cases.
  • Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) called the Center’s decision to drop Delhi and Punjab tableaus from the Republic Day parade “politically motivated.” However, the BJP has responded by saying that the committee which selects tableaus has set parameters, adding, “AAP should come up with the details on why it was rejected.” 
  • Delhi Traffic Police has announced its detailed plan to handle vehicular movement on New Year’s Eve, which includes the deployment of 2500 traffic personnel, 250 teams equipped with alcometers for checking drunken driving, and 450 motorcycles stationed at multiple spots.    
  • Congress Party celebrated its 139th Foundation Day, with party national president Mallikarjun Kharge hoisting the party flag at the AICC Headquarters in Delhi today. Addressing the media, Kharge said, “The party will never move away from its ideologies and will always progress with them.”
