  • IMD has issued heavy rainfall alerts to South Peninsular Tamil Nadu during the next three days and in Kerala between December 16 and 17. The Weather Agency has also issued dense fog alerts in Punjab and Haryana during early morning hours in the next four days.  
  • The Surat Diamond Bourse, with the world’s largest office complex built at a budget of $384 million, will be inaugurated by PM Narendra Modi on Sunday. The Diamond City processes about 90 percent of the world’s rough diamonds before they reach buyers across the globe. 
  • Delhi Police arrested Mahesh Kumawat, another accused in the Parliament Security Breach case, on Saturday. So far, six people have been arrested, including the attack mastermind Lalit Jha, who surrendered to the Police. 
  • Oman Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, who is on a three-day state visit, was received by PM Modi and President Droupadi Murmu on Saturday with a Guard of Honor from combined defense services. MEA Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said the visit would “reinforce longstanding friendship and cooperation between India and Oman.”
  • India celebrated Vijay Diwas today (December 16), marking the surrender of East Pakistan Forces in the 1971 war, which led to the creation of Bangladesh. During the war, some 90,000 East Pakistan Troops surrendered within a fortnight of fighting.  
  • In Kerala, COVID-19 substrain JN.1 has been discovered by the India SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG). JN.1 Substrain is severely immune-evasive, fast-spreading, and capable of infecting even vaccinated people and those infected by COVID-19 earlier. However, Rajeev Jayadevan, NIMA Covid Task Force’s co-chairman, said, “Severity so far appears to be the same as before.”
