1. CJI Ramana chooses Justice Lalit as his successor: CJI N V Ramana, retiring on Aug 26, has recommended Justice Uday Umesh Lalit as his successor to the Union Government. Justice Lalit, who will swear in on Aug 27, will have a short tenure of 74 days. 

2. ED summons to Mallikarjun Karge makes Congress fume: The Enforcement Directorate (ED), probing Young Indian, sent a summons to Mallikarjun Karge, Leader of the opposition in Rajya Sabha. The Congress party accused the government is trying to intimidate political opponents and deter them from questioning its performance.   

3. CUET canceled in several centers: The second phase of the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) for undergraduate programs was canceled and postponed at several centers due to a technical glitch. The National Testing Agency (NTA) later announced that canceled exams would be held on Aug 12-14. 

4. Priyanka Gandhi forcefully removed from protest site after she jumps barricade: Congress party leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was forcibly removed by cops when she climbed the police barricade and staged a sit-in. Leaders of the party, including Rahul Gandhi, were protesting against price-rise and unemployment.  

5. Sanjay Raut custody extended: Custody of Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut has been extended till Aug 8. ED sought the extension citing that Raut’s replies on transactions seen as proceeds from Patra Chawl redevelopment have been evasive. Meanwhile, the agency has summoned Sanjay Raut’s wife Varsha to record her statement.  

6. Dowry tragedy in Begusarai: In the Begusarai district of Bihar, a 21-year-old newly married woman died after she was allegedly forced to drink acid by her husband and her in-laws. She was tortured by them as her paternal family could not pay a dowry of 2 lakh rupees and a motorcycle.  

7. CCPA slaps fine on Amazon over the sale of sub-standard pressure cookers: The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has levied a fine of Rs. 1 lakh on Amazon for selling sub-standard pressure cookers. CCPA has also asked the e-commerce giant to recall such pressure cookers sold on their platform and reimburse the customers. 

8. Russia, now 3rd largest coal supplier to India: Per data from Indian Consultancy Coal-mint, Russia became the third-largest coal supplier to India in July, supplying 2.06 million tons of coal. Earlier, Russia was in the sixth spot. 

9. Pakistan is economically enslaved by IMF, says PM Shehbaz Sharif: Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, during his visit to flood-affected areas in Peshawar, said the country is enslaved by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) economically, although it secured its independence 75 years ago. 

10. Attempt to revive Iran nuclear deal: 10. Iran and US will hold talks in Vienna this week to revive their 2015 nuclear pact. Both countries have played down chances of a breakthrough, placing the onus on one another for a compromise.
