  1. Fire inside a stationary IRCTC coach at the Madurai Railway Station killed 10 Lukcnow passengers. According to initial investigations, the passengers were cooking inside the coach using a gas cylinder they had smuggled.
  2. A video of a class teacher in Muzaffarnagar asking a Muslim boy to be slapped by his fellow students has sparked outrage. The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has asked the Muzaffarnagar SSP to lodge an FIR against the teacher, though the father of the child said he would remove his kid from the school rather than file a police complaint.

With the monsoon remaining weak for nearly a month, 31% of India’s land mass faces moderate to extreme dryness and 47% mildly dry conditions, implying they could affect crop growth and agricultural yield. Citing the Standardized Agricultural Index (SPI) for July 27 – August 23, IMD scientist Rajib Chattopadhyay has called the situation serious, adding that the next two weeks (rain conditions) are crucial.

  8. PETA India has greeted team ISRO with a Vegan Cake for the successful soft landing of Chandrayaan-3 on the Moon’s southern pole. It has also thanked the National Space Agency for its decision to send a humanoid robot instead of animals to space for its Gaganyaan program.
