1. Special court in Mumbai sends Sena MP Sanjay Raut to ED custody till Aug 4: Enforcement Directorate (ED), which searched Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut’s house, detained him for questioning. He is under probe over the re-development of a Chawl in Mumbai and related transactions that involve his wife and other close associates. Meanwhile, a special court in Mumbai has allowed ED to question Sanjay Raut in custody till Aug 4.
2. Kerala reports India’s first monkeypox death: A 22-year-old returnee from the UAE, admitted to a private hospital in Thrissur, has died of the Monkeypox virus. It is the first Monkeypox death in India and the fourth outside Africa. Health Minister Veena George revealed that the man had tested positive when abroad but kept it a secret.
3. NIA raids multiple locations in search of IS modules: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) conducted raids at 13 locations across six states to bust terror modules linked to ISIS. The agency interrogated eight suspects and secured incriminating evidence related to a conspiracy case registered on June 25.
4. 5. Joint committee findings and recommendations on brick earth mining in Coimbatore: The Coimbatore district administration has submitted a report on environmental degradation due to brick earth mining in the Thadagam valley to the National Green Tribunal (NGT). However, environmental activist S Ganesh has said that the administration’s recommendation of a fine of Rs.443 crore is meager compared to the value of brick earth illegally mined, which he said is around Rs. 1.80 lakh crore.
