In a surprising move, Microsoft has mandated that all its employees in China switch from Android smartphones to iPhones for work purposes. This decision, effective from September 2024, is part of a broader security initiative by the tech giant.
The Shift to iPhones
Microsoft’s China-based staff will now rely solely on Apple devices to verify their identities when accessing work computers or phones. This directive effectively bans the use of Android devices within the workplace. The company has set up collection points for iPhones across its facilities in China, including Hong Kong.
The Motivation Behind the Change
One of the key drivers behind this shift is the absence of the Google Play Store in mainland China. Android users in the country have had to rely on app platforms run by Huawei or Xiaomi. By switching to iPhones, Microsoft aims to provide consistent access to its services through the iOS App Store. Employees will be able to use the Microsoft Authenticator password manager and the Identity Pass app seamlessly.
Microsoft’s Presence in China
While Microsoft does not disclose the exact number of employees in China, it has operated in the country since 1992. Its largest R&D center outside the United States, employing over 6,000 engineers and scientists, is located in China. In May 2024, the company asked around 800 local employees to consider relocating to other countries, including the US.
Seeking Security
Microsoft’s decision underscores the importance of security and uniformity in its operations. By embracing iPhones, the company aims to enhance productivity and streamline access to its services for its China-based workforce.
