There are many professions people choose to earn their livelihood or live by it to reach the pinnacle of fame. However, only a rare few among them cater to dire human needs, notably in situations requiring utmost care. Nursing is one such profession.
Nurses toil in the most arduous work environment. Each day they face new challenges and witness anguish in patients facing life or death moments and pain in their dear and near ones.
On a positive note, nurses also see people recovering from illnesses and getting discharged from hospitals. They hear the first cry of a newborn and the gasp of its mother in that pristine moment of relief and delight.
Day on day, their lives momentarily intertwine with new people as they emote and empathize with them.
People say doctors save a life. Well, that may be true. But the role of nurses is often less acknowledged. They deserve applause. Indeed, as a society, we must hail them for their selfless service, especially today (12 May) when the world celebrates International Nurses Day.
Celebrated since 1965, the International Nurses Day marks the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale, a social reformer who is popularly called the founder of modern nursing.
