The Karnataka HC has dismissed the writ petitions filed against the ban on Hijab in educational institutions. The court has said wearing a hijab is not an essential practice of Islam.
It noted that the prescription of a school uniform is only a constitutionally permissible reasonable restriction on students, and they cannot object to it.
The court has also said that it doesn’t see reasons to invalidate the Government order restricting religious attire in educational institutions, calling it within the powers of the Government to issue such an order.
Following the verdict, Karnataka CM Basavaraj Bommai said it’s a question of our children’s fate and education. So everyone should follow the court order. He added that necessary arrangements are ready to maintain law and order in the state.
Meanwhile, hailing the judgment, Karnataka attorney general Prabuling Navadki said, “Institutional discipline prevails over individual choice.”
