The flood situation in Assam and Meghalaya is looking grim, with incessant rains claiming as many as 31 lives (12 in Assam and 19 in Meghalaya) in the northeastern states.
Landslides and submerged roads in Guwahati are choking the capital city. Waterlogging has resulted in the cancellation of six trains, and four of them are running delayed in lower Assam’s Rangiya division.
Rivers Brahmaputra, Gauranga, Beki, Manas, Pagladia, Puthimari, and Jia-Bharli are flowing above the danger mark, and River Kopili is at its highest flood level mark.
Nearly 19 lakh people across the 18 districts of Assam have been directly affected by the floods, with the newly created Bajali district badly hit.
National Highway 6, the crucial transport route connecting Tripura, Southern Assam, Mizoram, and Meghalaya, is blocked as parts of the highway has got swept away in the floods.
Relief and rescue operations are progressing in full swing in the states, with the Indian Army, National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF), State Disaster Relief Force (SDRF), Police, Fire, and Emergency personnel working round-the-clock to rescue stranded people. Authorities have moved some 1 lakh people to 373 relief camps.
Red warnings in the states continue after days of incessant rains, landslides, and flooding. Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted ‘isolated extremely-heavy rainfall’ over Assam and Meghalaya on Saturday and Sunday (Jun 18 and 19).
