On April 1, the Principal Secretary and Managing Director of Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), Pradeep Yadav, chaired a stakeholders’ meeting to discuss the proposed Coimbatore Metro Rail Project.
The Coimbatore metro rail project would cover a total length of 139 km in three phases. The first phase will take up two corridors. Metro Rail Corridor-1 (31km with 26 stations) will be on Avinashi Road from Vellalore Bus Terminal till Karumapthampati, and Metro Rail Corridor-2 (14km with 14 stations) will be on Sathyamangalam Road from Ukkadam to Valaimpalayam Pirivu. The metro rail corridors will have the Coimbatore City Collectorate as the intersection point.
To begin with, CMRL will implement the first phase of the Coimbatore Metro Rail Project. Then, it will take up the second and third phases after a detailed study. As per sources, SYSTRA MVA Consulting (India) Ltd and RITES Ltd are in the process of finalizing the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for Phase one.
Where flyovers are already built, the metro lines would run parallelly alongside. Accordingly, CMRL would make the land acquisition. And, where flyovers are proposed and yet to be built, it will consider creating a vertical two-tier system.
The DPR will consider places that can accommodate parking, escalators facilities, lifts, and ramps to cross the roads to build metro rail stations. Also, Metro rail stations would be made with Public-Private Joint investment in Railway stations, Bus stands, large institutions, and commercial hubs.
The stakeholders’ meeting was attended by Coimbatore City Collector G S Sameeran, City Corporation Commissioner Raja Gopal Sunkara, CMRL officials, and representatives from the Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry Coimbatore, Coimbatore District Small Industries Association, Southern India Engineering Manufacturers’ Association, Residents Awareness Association of Coimbatore and Confederation of Real Estate Developers’ Associations of India.
To help stakeholders understand and implement the proposed project, CMRL would share precise details on the corridors with the concerned departments.
