The Supreme Court on Thursday came with a split verdict on petitions that contend the Karnataka government’s Hijab ban in educational institutions in the state. The appeal against the High Court order will now be placed before a large three-member bench.

Justice Hemant Gupta said hijab is not an essential practice of Islam and allowed the ban on wearing a headscarf in educational institutions in the state. On the other hand, Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia said, “The High Court took a wrong path. It is ultimately a matter of choice and Article 19(1)(a) and 25(1). It is a matter of choice, nothing more and nothing less.”

Justice Dhulia also underlined that it’s about the challenges in front of a girl child to come to the school, and asked whether we are doing any justice to the child.
