On February 17, 2024, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal sought a vote of confidence in the state assembly. This move came amidst allegations of the BJP attempting to poach AAP MLAs, triggering concerns about government stability. Kejriwal claimed “Operation Lotus,” aimed at toppling his government, was underway.
Kejriwal won the trust vote with 54 AAP MLAs supporting him, demonstrating continued majority in the Assembly. However, he launched scathing attacks on the BJP, calling them “anti-democracy” and claiming the party tried to bribe his MLAs. The BJP denied the allegations, terming them “baseless.”
Adding to the political turmoil, Kejriwal is also facing summons from the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with the Delhi Excise Policy. He claims the probe is politically motivated, aimed at harassing and pressurizing his government. The BJP countered, stating the investigation is independent and fair.
Kejriwal’s victory in the trust vote solidifies his government’s immediate future. However, the ongoing ED probe and political mudslinging create uncertainty.
