The Sri Lanka government ordered a 36-hour curfew starting from Saturday 6 pm to Monday 6 am. President Gotabaya Rajapaksa also announced a nationwide public emergency on Friday, as protests demanding his exit turned violent across many places in the country. 

Sri Lanka has been confronting a severe shortage of foreign currency and is struggling to pay for fuel and other essential imports. In addition, the country is facing power cuts, ranging from 10-13 hours a day.      

The Members of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka appealed to the government to ensure freedom of speech and peaceful assembly. They said, “There has been a failure to understand the aspirations of the people, and to empathize with the suffering of the people of the country.”

Meanwhile, a consignment carrying 40,000 MT of diesel under #Indian assistance through a $500 mn line of credit was delivered to Sri Lankan Energy Minister Gamini Lokuge.
