Japanese PM Fumio Kishida met PM Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Saturday. Both nations held a summit in the national capital to discuss bilateral trade and other geopolitical issues. Highlighting the talks, PM Modi, in his tweet, remarked, “Advancing friendship with Japan.”
In the meeting, the countries announced that Japan would invest $42 B in India in the next five years, raising its stakes in the Indian business. The summit also underlined steps taken by India to improve its business environment to facilitate ease in doing business and boost economic growth for Japanese investors.
Among the geopolitical issues discussed by the premiers, Ukraine and China were prominent. PM Kishida said that Russia’s war on Ukraine had shaken the international order. However, he added that “Japan, along with India, will keep trying to end the war and provide support to Ukraine and its neighboring countries.”
Foreign Secretary Harsh Singla summarized that both Prime Ministers were concerned about the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine.
In a joint statement, both countries have sought an immediate end to violence and resolution through dialogue and diplomacy. Further, it emphasized the global order built on the foundations of the United Charter and International law and respect for nations’ sovereignty and territorial integrity.
India, for its part, has raised the issue of Chinese troop building alone the LAC. But, again, regarding the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, India has maintained that dialogue alone can resolve the crisis between the nations.
