India’s Covid-19 weekly infection sees a 35 percent increase in numbers. The week (April 11-17) ended with 6,610 new cases.

It is the first such surge since January this year. However, it doesn’t indicate a nationwide rise in cases, primarily because the numbers come mainly from Delhi, Harayana, and UP. The spike reportedly is due to increased infections in NCR cities like Noida, Gurgaon, and Ghaziabad.

In the Southern part of the country, Covid19 cases in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka have remained stable. However, Rajasthan has witnessed a marginal increase. On the positive side, the upsurge in patients testing for the virus over the last week appears to be dropping in Gujarat.

Totally there are about 11,542 active cases in the country. The addition of 1000 cases from the previous week was contributed primarily by Delhi, Harayana, and UP. As per reports, 27 people have died of the Covid19 virus, the lowest Covid death toll in a week since March 23-29, 2020.

Meanwhile, IIT Kanpur professor Maninda Agarwal, whose mathematical model served as a reference to study the pandemic activity for the past two years, said the possibility of a fourth wave remains low. “The surge in Covid-19 cases is not building up the fourth wave, as of now.” However, he noted that the current rise in Delhi and adjoining areas could be because of the relaxation in curbs.

Amid cases in Delhi crossing the 500 mark, the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) plans to meet on April 20.
