India is furthering its inoculation drive by extending Covid19 booster shots to everyone above sixty. Previously, the Government had offered immunity shots to those vulnerable and have comorbidities among the 60 plus age group.
In addition, children aged between 12-14 years will receive the recently approved Corbevax vaccine developed by Biological E. Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya has said vaccination for these children would start from March 16.
The announcement has received mixed reviews from the medical fraternity. Some have called it a step to maximize vaccination and reach herd immunity.
However, others have called it unnecessary because children of this age group are not affected, and those affected also bounce back with natural immunity.
Nevertheless, the Union Health Ministry’s release has stated that scientific deliberations back its decision. Moreover, with the nationwide surge in Covid 19 cases in China, many countries are rapidly immunizing their population.
India is currently doing well with its sustained inoculation drive and has the lowest active Covid19 caseload in 675 days.
