O2 is a thriller Tamil movie released in Disney Hotstar OTT on 17th June 2022. Starring Nayanthara, Rithvik, and Barath Neelakantan in lead roles. The film is directed by G.S. Viknesh.
The O2 film was supposed to be a treat after Nayanthara & Viknesh’s marriage.
O2 Storyline
Nayanthara (as Parvathy) is an expert on plants and trees who carries the statement of how important they are. She is the mother of 7-year-old Veera, who is dependent on an Oxygen cylinder to breathe as he suffers from cystic fibrosis. Debut YouTube star Rithvik (as Veera) has performed very well.
The story starts with the bond between Parvathy and Veera. The importance of oxygen is the main theme of O2.
Parvathy, who resides in Coimbatore, has to take Veera to Cochin to treat his suffering. Everything goes well, as she had planned until they board a private bus.
Barath Neelakantan, an arrogant police officer, also boards the bus for a reason.
On the way, they get stuck because of the Kerala monsoon. Traffic and the bus timing pressure make the driver take a different route. And there comes the turning point. One needs to remember that Veera breathes with the help of an oxygen cylinder, and there is only one cylinder extra.
The bus takes a different route on a hillside, with heavy rain on the other side. The bus driver is very much in a hurry to reach Cochin as he is already late, and as commonly known, drivers face high pressure from bus owners to take the next trip. Unexpectedly, there comes a landslide pulling over the bus with mud and stones covering it. Passengers panic with no oxygen. And one needs to think, that the passenger list also includes the arrogant police officer.
The rest of the story deals with the following questions: Whether they all will survive, who will use the extra cylinder, is Veera safe, can they find any other source of oxygen, and what’s the purpose of the police officer to board the bus, will the rescue team come to know about the incident, will the rescue team be able to find the spot, and how they locate it.
As hinted, the rescue team arrives to save the passengers. However, the main scene, which could have been a major part of the thriller, is let down by the screenplay. It is not up to the mark. Though the script and theme are good, Viknesh fails here. More flaws make the movie bow down a bit.
Behind the screen
BGM by Vishal Chandrasekar is below average. A Thriller movie needs more BGM attention. In most scenes, BGM is average, and as we might note, in the rescue scene, BGM is below the average line.
Editing by Selva RK and cinematography by Tamizh A Azhagan are okay. Nothing much to be appreciated here. The landslide scene could have been better, and it is so simple. VFX is so poor and disappointing.
As said, the script and the theme are super good. Nayan and Rithvik steal the show, but the teamwork is missing. O2 needs more oxygen. Director Viknesh needs to work on the flaws for his next movie’s success.
Do watch and let us know your opinion. O2 is streaming in Disney Hotstar.
