Gujarat Government has announced that students from classes 6-12 of all schools affiliated to the Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (GSHSEB) will learn Bhagavad Gita. The learning method will also include reciting the shlokas (verses) and storytelling.
The Education Minister Jitu Vaghani announced the decision in the state assembly on Thursday. He said the Government resolution aligns with the Center’s New Education Policy (NEP), which aims to introduce the knowledge rooted in India’s rich and diverse ancient culture.
Addressing the media, he justified the decision to introduce Gita by stating that people of all faiths have already accepted the moral values and principles in the ancient Hindu scriptures.
The other Government Resolution passed in the assembly says that English will now be a compulsory subject from Class 1. However, for classes 1 and 2, there will be textbooks only for teachers. The idea would be to get the students introduced to the language before they start learning through textbooks from Class 3.
According to the Minister, the Government will implement them from the new academic year beginning this June 2022.
