If you are sweating it out this summer, don’t be surprised because people are experiencing a similar plight across the country. Indeed, March this year was the hottest in a century. As per IMD, it is the second hottest April in Delhi in 72 years. The capital recorded a monthly maximum of 40.2 degrees celsius. 

The westerly winds blowing from Pakistan to Odisha, sweeping west, northwest, and central regions of India, have been causing a massive heatwave in several parts of the country. As a result, states like Rajasthan, Gujarat, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Chattisgarh, Odisha, Telangana, and West Bengal are facing heatwave like conditions. 

Indian Meteorological Department tweeted that some parts of the West Rajasthan will experience Severe Heat conditions on 29th-30th April and May 1. However, the conditions will decrease in isolated pockets on May 2. IMD has also issued an ‘Oranga Alert’ for several states in the northwestern part of India. A similar alert has also been given to the Central and Western regions of the country. 

Jodhpur and Bikaner districts in Rajasthan recorded maximum temperatures of 45 to 47 degrees celsius, while Allahabad in UP registered 46.8 degrees celsius on May 1. As severe heat has gripped the nation, people should stay indoors during peak temperatures of the day, avoiding direct contact with the sun to prevent sunstrokes. Also, consume sufficient fluids and remain hydrated.
